The StemCellFactory project combines leading forces in stem cell research and engineering sciences in North Rhine Westphalia to build an automated system for production of patient-specific iPS cells and their neural and cardiac derivatives for drug screening. The production facility includes automation, standardization and parallelization of all required cell culture steps, including a comprehensive quality management system. It closes a technology gap in the anticipated rapid development of iPS cell-based processes in pharma, biotechnology and regenerative medicine. The project leadership is with LIFE & BRAIN GmbH, based at Bonn University Medical Center, and the Rheinisch-Westfälische-Technische-Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering – Cell Biolology. Further partners are the Institutes of Reconstructive Neurobiology (RNB) and Physiology I of Bonn University Medical Center, the Fraunhofer-Institute for Production Technology (IPT) in Aachen, the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Biomedicine (MPI) in Münster and HiTec Zang GmbH in Herzogenrath.
